Recycling is a big deal, there’s not much that’s more important than making sure our children have a healthy world to grow up in, and I believe recycling is a huge part of that…so do the wonderful people at Pillsbury. In fact, this week they’re obsessing about recycling! And today you just might find one of my projects featured on the home page!!! {It will also be featured all week here}.
When we moved into our house I had a difficult time figuring out where to put our trash and recycle bins. Our kitchen doesn’t offer a whole lot of extra space, and we needed something larger than what would fit in a cabinet. Eventually I settled on some silver swing-top trash cans – similar to this one – to sit in our dining nook {off the kitchen}.
The only problem with having two of the exact same trash cans was that people were constantly getting recycling and trash confused. I refer to this conundrum as “can confusion.” Even though I don’t put a trash bag in our recycling can, each week I would inevitably find non-recyclables in the recycling can. Or even worse: the recycle can would be empty because people {including my husband} would be too afraid to use it without a bag – thinking that it was for trash.
I knew I had to come up with a solution. And that’s when I remembered that I have a Silhouette Cameo! So I quickly whipped up some labels for our cans in a pretty turquoise vinyl. I can’t even tell you how much of a hit these were with our friends and family. With how prevalent recycling is these days, people really seem to like the idea that they can immediately tell if we recycle and where the recycling goes. I’ve found we have a lot more recycling since I’ve added these trash and recycling labels.
You can purchase your own custom set of labels here, or find a how-to here.

Love it! Funny how the best ideas are simply solutions. :-D
