One of the things I love about my little family is that we’re always up for an adventure! I can’t tell you how often we leave the house to run a quick errand and end up being gone for hours doing something unexpected.
We always have a ton of fun, and I never regret our spontaneous trips. But, sometimes the Mom in me feels guilty. If I’m not planning for a trip, I can’t pack my bag with everything we might need. That’s why I started keeping an Adventure Pack in my van with all sorts of goodies … so I never have to feel bad about not being prepared for anything that might happen!
What’s an adventure pack you ask? For me, it’s a small bin with organizers in it. My bin has four sections: one for food, one for drinks, one for clothes, and one for activities. My boys rarely need clothing changes, but I like to keep one seasonally-appropriate outfit for each of them along with some undies and diapers just to be on the safe side. What if we happen upon a pond and have to go catch some minnows … you just never know!
As far as activities, I change it up occasionally, but there are always coloring books and crayons in my van. That will keep them occupied for hours! Well, an hour at least ;-) I also love keeping toy trains and other games each boy happens to be into at the time.
Now let’s all be honest here, food and drinks are the most important categories here! Kids are always hungry – am I right? I have no idea where my five year old puts it all! For me, water is a must-have so the kids don’t get dehydrated. I also love to keep small cartons of milk (that don’t require refrigeration) on hand. Mind you – I don’t recommend keeping either of these in your vehicle all the time. Whenever we go somewhere, I take some drinks out of the garage fridge and throw them in the adventure pack.
All moms want their kids to have healthy things to snack on. That’s why I keep bags of vegetable-infused crackers, pretzels, dried fruit and nuts, and pouches of fruit and veggie blends around. But, when you’re on a family adventure, I believe it’s important to have a special treat to enjoy. That’s why I love the new Oreo two-packs! They’re perfectly portioned for families on-the-go, and they’re super convenient in their own little packages so I can just grab them and head out.
Oreo two-packs can be found at your local grocery store, and are sold in packages of 18. *psst* If you love peanutty-snacks, you can get them in Nutter Butter, too!
I’d love to hear what items you like to keep on hand for spontaneous family adventures! Let me know in the comments section below …
