This is my favorite time of the year! We have been busy busy this past week getting all of our Christmas decorations out. For some reason, the husband has decided that three Christmas trees are necessary in this new house, so I’m trying to figure out a budget-friendly way to decorate them all! Of course, our family room tree will house the hodge-podge of ornaments we have collected over the years. I think the small tree upstairs in the office will just have some colorful lights & lots of snowflake ornaments. However, my biggest decorating challenge this year is “Gerald” – that’s the name my husband has given the gigantic tree he picked for our front room. The thing is huge, and I don’t know if you’ve looked at oversized ornaments lately, but they’re expensive!
I was inspired my an ornament my aunt made me years ago; it was a styrofoam ball covered with tiny green & gold sequins, spelling my name. It has always been one of my favorites, but last year I think it met its final days. I’ll keep the ornament forever, but it makes me sad that most-likely it won’t ever hang on my tree again. So, I thought I could make my very own sequin ornaments to cover “Gerald.”
I am also participating in One Artsy Mama’s Ornament Exchange, so I made one for my partner {hope she loves it}!
These were super easy to make and very affordable when considering the cost of most store-bought ornaments these days. The great thing about these ornaments is that they can also be made into vase-filler balls. I’ve been thinking of leaving a few out year-round to set in my entry-table basket.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Styrofoam Balls
Large Sequins {found in the ornament decorating aisle at Michael’s}
Sequin Pins
Decorative Ribbon
Like I said, these are really easy to make – simply start pinning on your sequins! I wanted a more uniform look, so I started in the center and made a row all the way around the ball. It’s easiest to keep everything even and consistent if you use the line on the styrofoam ball as your guideline.
For the rows beneath my guideline, I placed the sequins under the previous row. All sequins placed above my guideline went over the sequins from the previous row. I hope that makes sense? Of course feel free to make your ornaments as random or as uniform as you’d like.
If you’re making vase-filler balls, you can stop when all of the styrofoam is covered with sequins. Aren’t they so fun & festive? I think these would make amazing New Year’s decorations!
Continue on if you’re making ornaments:
So…if you’re using glittery ribbon, like I was. Do NOT burn the edges! The ribbon will catch fire and you might temporarily freak out about burning down your new house…not good.
Cut your ribbon to a size you think would be best for hanging your ornament with.
Wrap the ribbon in a circle and attach to the top of the ornament with a sequin and pin. {See the photo above to get a visual}.
And there you have it…beautiful and affordable ornaments!
*Note: I used one bag of large sequins & one bag of sequin pins to complete two ornaments, with a little left-over.
Beautiful!
I really like those! I love anything that has a little bling!
