We don’t have a lot of kid’s craft supplies in our house, because without fail the little man finds them and uses them inappropriately {you know…on the walls and what not}. So, when I want to give him the opportunity to be creative through art, it’s always a quest for me to find things that I can put together to make him homemade, affordable art supplies.
A while back I purchased some vanilla pudding to make Amish Friendship Bread with and never ended up using it. We never have vanilla pudding in the house, so this was a real treat. As soon as I spotted it in the cabinet, I knew we could have some finger painting fun with pudding!
Ingredients:
Instant Vanilla Pudding {or other no-color flavor}
Food Coloring
Milk
Mix pudding according to the box instructions.
Mine required chilling in the refrigerator for 5 minutes. To keep little man busy I let him do my chores for the day…! Just kidding; he wanted to use the Swiffer. It’s his favorite cleaning supply ever!
When the pudding is at a soft-set stage, remove it from the fridge and divide it into small containers. Add food coloring to each.
I only used one drop of each color, though the yellow & blue could have used more color to stand out.
Let your little one go crazy!
At first little man was very neat & clean with this project. He would only use one finger, and was making nice circles.
He also made paint trains…choo choo!
How exciting when he discovered he could EAT the paint!
{Though I did give him a good warning that this is the only paint we are allowed to eat…no other paints!}
He had to line up his paints in a row. All the better to see them I suppose.
Little man had a lot of fun mixing the paints together…he is a wild child.
Aaaand then he found out he could stick his hands in the paint containers!
This is such a great activity for teaching about ‘squishy’ things. He loved the feeling of the pudding.
It’s SO exciting to have hands covered in pudding paint that you can eat & make a mess with – and not get in trouble!
I actually really loved the look of the paint when he was finished with his art.
This isn’t really the kind of painting you would keep forever…when the pudding dries it gets a bit hard & crusty. But this is how the art looked after drying overnight.
I really love it – and little man was so proud of his edible finger paint art!
The best part is…we had left-over pudding. So here you have an art project & a snack all in one!
What do you think of edible finger painting? Have you ever made some finger paints out of household items?
