We are so blessed to have friends and family who give us well-made, re-vamp-able furniture to fill our house with! After we had little man and moved to Indiana, a friend of the family gave us a dresser and changing table that she no longer needed. I had to take the opportunity, of course, to paint the set {which I am currently thinking I will re-paint again soon, but we’ll keep that for another day}. The changing table came with 2 baskets and liners perfect for diapers and other changing table accessories. However, I noticed very quickly that the baskets put large and very noticeable scratches on the changing table. :-( The solution? Line the bottom of the baskets with felt so they don’t scratch the paint anymore!
Supplies (for 2 large baskets):
Hot glue gun + sticks
Scissors
3 Sheets of felt
1. My baskets are approximately 12 x 12″. If your baskets are larger or smaller you will need to adjust the “measurements” accordingly. Take the first two sheets of felt & fold in half {just enough to be able to see the crease}. Cut along the lines. These pieces will go on the outsides of the basket bottoms.
2. Take the last sheet of felt and fold into 3rds. Cut along the lines.
3. Hot glue the half pieces to the basket bottom and use the smaller pieces to fill in the gap between them.
4. There will be some overhang, so trim the excess.
You now have a smooth-sliding, no-scratch basket bottom! It might seem like a small thing, but it makes me so happy to know that painted furniture projects all over will be saved because of this quick and easy DIY project!

Thanks for sharing at the linky party! Such a good idea – I can’t stand when my baskets leave scratches on furniture. I have a storage piece that I added baskets to, and the finish is awful! I’m going to have to do this….
Have a great week!

Thank you for hosting! Furniture scratches are the worst – especially when you’ve just re-done the piece! Let me know how it goes! :-)

This is a great tip! I can see the little felt feet falling off easily so a sheet of felt makes perfect sense. Furniture everywhere will be saved thanks to you ;)

They do, especially on baskets! Not to mention it’s SO much cheaper to buy sheets of felt.

So creative!!! I know there are always tons of mismatched baskets at the thrift store. Painting them and putting felt on them is such a great way to spruce them up and keep them working. thanks for sharing!

good idea! We’re planning on building a bench for our entryway with baskets for shoes….and I’ve been pre-emptively worrying about how the baskets would scratch up the wood…I’ll have to remember this!
