I am super stoked to show you this tutorial today! As you may have seen from the Pink Safari Party photos, to help entertain the kiddos I created some customized coloring pages of the party girl. A ton of people have been asking how I did this, so I am going to give you the step-by-step tutorial!
All you need is Photoshop and a printer and you’re good to go.
Start out by creating a new Photoshop document with these settings: 8.5″ width, 11″ height, 72 pixels/inch resolution, and RGB color mode with a background color of white.
Choose the photo you want to use as your coloring page; mine was a Facebook picture of little man at Easter time. Copy the picture and paste it into your Photoshop document {using “ctrl + v”}. Adjust the picture to take up your whole document frame.
Make sure your Photoshop foreground color is set to black and the background white, or your coloring page won’t turn out correctly. Select the photocopy option under filter -> sketch. If you have a different version of Photoshop, the photocopy selection might be under a different folder, but it will be there – just search for it if you don’t see it right away. {I’ve noticed some of the newer versions of Photoshop have this filter under the filter gallery.
A new window will pop-up so you can make adjustments to the photo detail and darkness. Make these adjustments to your liking…I went for a much higher detail and a slightly higher darkness, which gave me the result below.
Don’t worry if your photo has weird blotches all over – we’re going to fix that! Using either your eraser tool or the brush tool set to white, erase any spots and shading that you don’t want. I had a little bit to erase on my background, and I fixed quite a bit of the shading on little man’s face.
You may decide that you want to put a quote or a name on the coloring page. Just select the type tool and a fun font set to black and add it to the photo.
Save your DIY coloring page and print!
Here’s my finished coloring page of little man – how adorable? I am loving it! Maybe the next art added to our playroom ‘Masterpiece” wall will be these coloring pages.
I think a custom coloring book would be such a great Christmas present for the family, or birthday card for a friend!
