Over the years, I have heard of may different Thanksgiving traditions involving writing down the things you are thankful for & using them as decorations. Most of these ideas weren’t really my cup of tea, but I really loved the idea: being aware of what you are thankful for each year. While pulling out my Fall decorations, I found a set of basket-like cornucopias. I used the smallest on my mantel, the medium size was placed on the dining table, and the largest…well I couldn’t think of what to do with it. But then it hit me: isn’t a cornucopia supposed to be the “horn of plenty”? Doesn’t it represent the abundance of blessings we have been given? So, I decided to make a “Thankful” station by the front door of my home.
I made a sign to remind everyone to “Give Thanks” throughout this season. I taped my printable to a vintage soda syrup jar I had lying around.
Next, I printed small pieces of paper that said: “I am thankful for…” and placed them next to my cornucopia {with a few pens}.
My goal is to have everyone who enters our home write down something they are thankful for and place it in the cornucopia. I haven’t decided what to do with the papers yet. Most likely they will just live out their lives in the cornucopia, and then get put away. I love the thought that when people enter my home, they have the opportunity to open their hearts & be receptive to the blessings they have been given.
If you don’t have a cornucopia to use, place the “Give Thanks” printable on a floral vase. Let’s face it…we all have a ton of those plain vases that come with bouquets! Have everyone put their papers into the vase instead.
I saw an e-card recently that said this:
Black Friday: because only in America do people trample others for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have.
It definitely gave me a good laugh, but it really is true how crazy we get about things this time of year. I hope that this little cornucopia can help remind you of how blessed we all truly are!
What are you most thankful for this year?
