When we first started the process of building our new home, we were told that there would be some unexpected plan changes. Something about the slope of the ground made it necessary to move the door from the garage into the house. At first I was freaking out a bit… I mean, we had no examples of this change so it was hard to figure out how it would work. But after a few days of thought on the subject, I realized this would be an awesome bonus. It hit me that this extra space we’d gain would allow for more kitchen storage. While my original idea involved cabinets and marble countertops, I’ve finagled an IKEA Kallax pantry hack that seems pretty ingenious!

While we were building, my goal was to create a butler’s pantry type space in the dining area using this extra wall that we gained. I was planning on simple shaker style cabinets to coordinate with the kitchen … but in a bright mint color for fun. The countertops would be marble, and I’d match a floor-to-ceiling backsplash to our current design. Those cabinets I mentioned? They were going to be totally custom inside with great storage.
I love these! My house is 100 years old and while it looks like there’s a ton of storage, a lot of it is unusable. This would be a great solution and I LOOOOVE how all of the wine looks. This stores a ton more wine than my current wine cabinet, and that’s what the wine cabinet is made for!
