The other day I was getting increasingly frustrated with how bland and boring our master bathroom is. I needed something to liven it up – short of painting, changing the flooring, installing colorful tiles, etc. I decided to make a fun project for the hubs’ sink area. So, before he left for work I stealthily asked him to cut out a 12×12″ piece of scrap plywood from the garage. Of course, he was extremely suspicious but went along with my wishes knowing he had to get to work and would find out sooner or later what I was up to.
As soon as the husband left for work I broke out my Annie Sloan dark wax and coated the front and sides of the plywood. I am really amazed at how beautiful the wax brought out the grain and detail of the plywood. I guess I’ve always thought plywood was the cheap, boring wood used for sub-flooring and other building stuff. But, obviously, I was wrong!
The wax does take quite some time to dry…I was incredibly impatient while waiting for it. You know, getting the blow dryer out to speed up the process. It really was only about 5 hours, but it seemed like an eternity in the midst of anticipating an adorable new bathroom sign.
To help shorten the waiting time, I broke out my Cameo and created a cute sign template in Silhouette Studio. When it seemed like the wax was getting close to being dry, I went ahead and cut out the template on vinyl.
*If you don’t have a cutting machine, print your design on card stock and cut it out by hand.
Next, I placed my vinyl template on the wood…it wasn’t 100% dry so I had a little bit of difficulty getting it to stick, but it ended up working out just fine. Then I broke out the Annie Sloan chalk paint in Paris Grey because it’s amazing and will stick to anything! Since I was going for the ‘rustic’ look, I didn’t use even brush strokes or worry about keeping a cohesive painting method.
As soon as I finished painting, I removed the vinyl to ensure the smoothest line possible.
Attach a picture hanger to the back for easy installation.
The husband is obsessed with this quote {and I must admit I do find it a tad bit amusing these days}, so it was the perfect choice for his area of the bathroom. I love this sign so much that I am planning on making one for me too as soon as I figure out a fun quote to use…any ideas?
I can’t wait to see some of the fun signs you guys come up with!

Haha this is fabulous.
I love this, and for some odd reason I say it in a Sean Connery, James Bond accent! I can’t believe that wax did that…. amazing! I’m your newest follower. Stopping by from the SIMACB man up, link up.
I don’t think you can say it without the accent…Thanks for the follow!
is there any way you could email the template in photoshop or any tips on how to scale it to size to print out at kinkos
